Aligarh: The President of India in the capacity of Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University granted approval to new off-campus centres to come up in Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Malappuram (Kerala). Vice Chancellor Prof P.K. Abdul Azis said that the deck is now cleared for the two centres. AMU received the approval yesterday from the office of President of India Pratibha Patil under Section 12 (2) of the University Act.
“The approval granted by the President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of AMU is historic in nature. It is for the first time that AMU is going to start Special Centres outside the city of Aligarh", the VC said.
Prof. Azis further said that it is the biggest gift of the UPA Government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi to the Muslim community for the promotion of minority education. The University is thankful to the Government of West Bengal, Kerala and Bihar for readily providing to AMU the required land free of cost.
“With this initiative, Aligarh Muslim University would be in the forefront of a Movement for the promotion of education, particularly among Muslims and other minorities in India”, he observed.
Later addressing a meeting of Chairmen of Departments of Studies and Principals of Colleges, AMU VC Prof. said that this is a moment of great jubilation and a historic moment that the University has received the seal of approval to set up special AMU Centre. He thanked the Central Government and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherji for his help and intervention in establishing these centres. Prof. Azis said the Union Government has already sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for Murshidabad and Rs 10 crore for Malappuram centres.
Speaking on the new initiative, AMU VC said that with a view to make a beginning the University is planning to start five year integrated BALLB and MBA programmes in these special centres from the next academic session.
Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis also thanked the West Bengal, Kerala and Bihar state governments for providing free land for the establishment of AMU’s Special Centres.
